Dean Hewitson founded his eponymous winery in 1998, with the fundamental belief that great wines are the expression of the soil and season in which they are grown. In the heart of South Australia's famed Barossa Valley lies Hewitson's Old Garden, an ancient vineyard of Mourvedre planted in 1853 by Friedrich Koch. This vineyard has seen the entire history of Australia's wine industry. Having survived floods, fires, famines and the worldwide spread of Phylloxera in the late 1800s, this oldest-known surviving planting of Mourvedre recently celebrated its 160th birthday. We can't think of another $20 bottle that has a vineyard of this pedigree in the blend.
